Marnost Nad Marnost
Moorah
Formed in Czechia around 2019, MOORAH is a Post Black Metal band signed to a pretty large label out there...Art Gates. From their Bandcamp page, "Inspired by the intensity and the approach of trve Czech and Norwegian black metal acts of 90's. Raw, powerful, poetic." This is their debut EP, and contains six tracks. "Radiant" leads off the album. It begins with some soft piano notes and some background ambiance. A brief clean guitar passage leads to galloping drums and rhythm guitars. The vocals are gravelly and harrowing. "Vyvrátíme modly" opens with a bustling energy. I hear mostly Black Metal sounds here, and not a lot of Post elements, but that is neither here nor there.
"Vstávej" begins with distorted guitars and some reverberating dissonance. From there, the speedy track repeats itself over and over again, without much variation. "Marnöst" opens with thumpy bass notes and solemn some guitar notes. The vocals are almost rapped at first, with a dark edge. Drums roll forward in quadruple time and then back off. Nic není begins with a slower grind of discordant rhythms and heavy tones. One thing I have always noticed is that fledgling bands typically don't have trouble creating something heavy...only something memorable. "Slunovrat" closes the album. This song features a more discernable pattern, and the quick drop to ambient tones to finish the song closes in on the mark of Post Metal more directly. A little more of this would go a long way.
Having reviewed hundreds of Black Metal albums over the years, once thing that always perplexes me is when artists insist on sticking to the blueprint laid down by the FWOBM. Akin to the Hard Rock genre, when the artists are not interested in creating anything new, but just re-hashing the elements of the genre when it began, MOORAH have not created anything new here. Take some chances, and create something of your own. If you blaze your own path, you are more likely to be satisfied as a band. This is just my opinion.
