Overdrivers - Rock Out! album cover

The OVERDRIVERS is as unlikely a band as you could ever find. In this age, pretty much everyone from BODY COUNT, to LADY GAGA have adopted elements of progressive-metal, and djent. How oddly comforting to find a band with the balls to erupt a release, with such dedication to a mid-tempo Aussie-rock swagger. "Rock Out!" just doesn't need any of those complex polyrhythms, otherworldly leads, or epic chugfests to say what they want/have to say.

Now mind you, I've listened to this EP multiple times now. It's quite possible some archaic means of mind-control was employed in the production of this work, and I am another of it's unwitting victims.  There is just something fundamentally honest about "Rock Out!" The first track "You Cheated On Me", I can "hear" him finding out his girlfriend/wife/whatever is banging someone else, freaking out, stomping to the door, getting in his vehicle, and bailing out on her. From the intro on, we follow him straight to the bar, where he gets drunk...and then either hooks up with someone else, or goes back home to his cheater.

"Factory" comes off at first kind of like an AC-DC tune. A bass-rich, to and from rhythm, with a bit of working-class attitude. It brings home both the feel of futility, and persistence of factory work, as well as the indifference one experiences at the hands of numbers-obsessed employers. Beneath it all, we find a mildly disassociated perspective, as if the only reason he's there is because he's certain this job isn't the rest of his life, and better things lie ahead.

My opinion of this work baffles even me. I'm usually very particular with regard to my taste in music, but something about "Rock Out!" with it's casual, and honest approach says "chill out bro, crack a cold one, and hang out with us!" to me. Simple 80s-style song structure, and rhythms,  highly-relatable subject matter, decent production, and a no-frills presentation. If it works, what else do you really need?
