Glenn Hughes - Building The Machine album cover

First of all I have to say that I don't feel worthy enough to review an album from The Voice Of Rock, Glenn Hughes, but since I'm his biggest fan in this 'Zine, I'll give it a try. Hughes is maybe the only singer that his voice combines  Rock, Blues, Soul, Funk and even Metal tunes and yes we can witness all that in Building The Machine.

Glenn's band delivers the goods with great passion and impeccable technique, while the guest appearances by people such as Pat Travers and Bobby Kimball (Toto) add a special sound to the songs. The production that is handled by Glenn Hughes himself and Michael Scott is crystal clear.

The album start with the strongest song of the album Can't Stop The Flood. My favorite tracks are the Feels Like Home, that starts us a ballad and later it culminates giving me the shivers every time I listen to it, and the blues-like I Will Follow You that would have made the CD worth buying even if every other song had sucked!. Beyond The Numb and Big Sky give to the album a melancholic - mourning sound that burdens the heart of every listener (Both songs are dedicated to friends of Glenn's that died last year).

Building The Machine also features a cover of Rare Earth's classic I Just Want To Celebrate which is way too funky for my likes, but yes it sounds better with Hughes voice. Also, a remake of Deep Purple's Highball Shooter is included. This amazing version rewards every Deep Purple fan for sticking with Glenn all these years.

Yes, this album worths a 10, the only reason that I rate it as an 8 is the fact that I could use some more hard rocking tunes and less funky ones plus the soul-like backing vocals get on my nerves sometimes. Yes, I am a narrow-minded rock fan, with no musical education! But hey, who cares of what I say, anyway? I just hope Mr. Hughes will forgive me for that.

8 / 10
