Pure unapologetic Raw Black Metal EP from long standing Black Metal legend IRAE, in his most adventurous and eerie incarnation to date. Broken down into four parts - "Dangerovz Magick Zpells From The Mesziah of Death" takes us on the journey of an old wizard as he makes a deal with supernatural forces to obtain the power to conquer the world.
The tone for the EP is established immediately with a tortured guttural scream to kick off. The tremolo guitar playing and blasting drums throw the listener into the deep end of Raw Black Metal. The snare sounds very soft in the blast beats, which takes away from the power of the blasts but sets a calmer, downbeat tone to the music. "Part II" is a 10-minute raw Epic, and is pure unrelenting Raw Black Metal.
"Part III" is undoubtedly the most interesting and unique track. It has one of if not the best instrumentals I have heard on a Black Metal album, a wonderful synth line with a downer riff, underlined by pushing, simple and effective drums. Vulturius uses the full range of his vocals, high pitched pained wails and howling, as well as the closest you will hear to clean vocals. The vocals often drown out the instrumental, had it been mixed more evenly this would have been one of my favorite tracks of the year.
'Part IV' brings us more of the synth, with plunking chords dancing over the blast beats to create a magical sonic contrast. The song is a powerful finale, the guitar and drums are relentless, as are the vocals. The journey of the wizard ends with a banger. The halftime drum section is brilliant, it's a meaningful change from the thunderous blasts, it adds a distinct heaviness.
"Dangerovz Magick Zpells From The Mesziah of Death" is a fascinating, whimsical journey into the depths of the King of Portugal's Raw Black Metal scene. Proving his vast repertoire of songwriting, Vulturius has created a fantastic eldritch record that is layered with amazing riffs, brilliant sounding drums and a sui generis vocal performance. I am a big fan of the combination of 90's Black Metal and Lo-Fi elements, which only adds to the mystical concept of the wizard.
