Circle of Sighs - Narci album cover

CIRCLE OF SIGHS is a black hole of mystery. Not much is known about the band itself other than it surely exists with three members in partially to fully masked disguise. Their first music piece came out in 2018 just before their debut album "Salo". Doom Metal circles latched onto their experimental style and anxiously awaited what was next from the band. Their second album "Narci" (released in June 2021) is certainly on another level of Avant Garde/Experimental Metal standards, with some stellar cover artwork of "space owl" to snag your attention visually as well.

The album opens with the space-y synthy "Spectral Arms". The longest song on the album is a genre-bending galaxy with some Ambient Electronic pieces wrapped around a heaping portion of PINK FLOYD-esque Psychedelia with a meteor shower of heavy Doom Metal distortion within. There's this feeling of floating alone among the cosmos; it's a flowing, yet lonely and longing emotion weaved into the melodies of this track. "We Need Legends" brings on a whole new level of weird. The distorted, thrumming Electronic beats and melodies are quite a trip. They loop in a wonky guitar melody and some piano midway through then keep on layering the beats and basslines. It's one wild zero-gravity hop across an uncharted planet. "A Crystal Crown of Cosmic Pain" carries on with the bass-heavy Experimental feel. This one is like landing on Mars, glancing out at the mountains of red sand and the endless stars above. The Stoner/Psychedelic vibe paints the red dusty winds, the heavy distortion makes everything feel like its moving in slow motion.

"Roses Blue" is a cover of the iconic track from singer/songwriter JONI MITCHELL. This one reels back in the 70s Psych Rock with some awesome fuzzy guitar work. It soon goes into almost Extreme Metal territory stylistically pooled in a heavy rippling effect, making the song feel like it's being played over speakers high in the atmosphere. After a strange interlude "Segue 04" it leads into an even crazier song, the title track "Narci". It begins with some face melting screamed vocals and low chuggy riffs. The drums add some chaos to the mix along with sporadic timing. Not to mention the saxophone melody weaved right in, making this 'chaotic good'  song somehow feel so right. "Heaven in Flames" has this helicopter low thrum sound effect over isolated vocals and layers of spoken words. They slowly add in more effects like the drum beat and more layers of vocals as the song goes along. This one goes rather Darkwave at points, rhythmically and vocally. The album closes with the trippy "The Man Who Stole the Wind". This was probably the most palatable song on the album with great spiraling melodies and a pure Psych Rock feel. It's dreamy, like the drift through outer space has finally become home.

Overall, "Narci" is one wild projection through outer space. The amount of strange, hard to describe moments alone makes it rather fascinating to hear. They create a glorious vibrant supernova of synth heavy sound, with layers of distortion and percussion that you can't tear yourself away from.  Essentially, CIRCLE OF SIGHS moreso has the opposite effect from their name by instead leaving the listener breathless, unsure on what to expect next as every song thrums along with one unexpected surprise after another. Avant Garde Metal lovers and Electronic fanatics can unite behind this pure sound bending 44 minute experimental wonder and catch their breath again when it ends.
