Loss
Osiah
OSIAH hailing from Sunderland, UK were founded by Ricky Lee Roper in 2012. Previously being active as HUMANITY DEPRAVED, OSIAH are a technical Deathcore band and have released one EP and two full-length albums prior to the new album. "Loss" was mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (CRYPTOPSY), recorded and produced by Andy Mallaby, and released via California label Unique Leader Records which has a number of Death Metal, Deathcore, and Grindcore bands among their roster. The album has a length of about 48 minutes.
OSIAH deliver an album that is a Deathcore record at its base but with other elements, most notably technical Death Metal. The album starts with a short intro followed by an onslaught of merciless breakdowns, aggressive riffing, and brutal vocals which are the main drivers of the sound on "Loss". "The Second Law" starts with a series of hammering blast-beats, flesh-ripping guitar riffs, and growling vocals that cover almost the whole range of the gutturals. The texture is complex with a number of down-tempo sequences and the track is pretty technical especially with the guitars and the drums. "Paracusia" follows in principle the same pattern with the structure being more straightforward. The sound leans a bit more towards Death Metal without having the technicality of the preceding track. "Paracusia" includes classical down-tempo sequences during the second half of the song. OSIAH smartly mix up their sound, "Queen Of Sorrow" is played at breakneck speed with vicious riffing, combinations of blast-beat attacks and relentlessly double-bass drumming as well as growls and screams coming straight from the abyss. There is a mid-tempo break that intensifies the darkness of the song. Compared to "Queen Of Sorrow", "Temporal Punishment" is almost a kind of breather.
The album includes two songs with guest vocalists. The title track features Jason Evans (INGESTED) and Ben Duerr (SHADOW OF INTENT; HOLLOW PROPHET) lends his vocals on "The Eye Of The Swarm". "Loss" is a very aggressive mid-tempo Deathcore song with a very dark melodic guitar theme driving the song. "The Eye Of The Swarm" is one of the few fast tracks on the album, just interrupted by a down-tempo break. The vocal performances are ear catching especially regarding the diversity of the vocal ranges.
"War Within Our Walls" is another track that falls within the category bludgeoning and blisteringly fast while "The Ominous Mind (Jaded Inside)" is a doom-laden mid-tempo track with occasional blast-beat outbursts. The guitars are a bit more technical and provide a gloomy atmosphere. "The Ominous Mind (Jaded Inside)" was released as video and the YouTube link is given below. The final third of the album contains another fine Deathcore tracks, where "Echoes" stands out for me with a combination of mid-tempo grooves, down-tempo breaks, and occasional blast-beat attacks in between.
"Loss" is Deathcore at its best. OSIAH combine the best elements of Deathcore with technical Death Metal to create an album that is brutal, evil, and dark. The mix between Deathcore grooves and technicality is just perfect and especially Noah Plant on the drums and vocalist Ricky Lee Roper perform outstanding on the entire album. OSIAH have developed their sound further compared to their previous albums and prove that they have their own character and identity as a band. The album is very well produced. OSIAH have shown that they are ready to go head-to-head with the big names of Deathcore and "Loss" should be part of the collection of every Deathcore fan.
