The Birth of the Beginning Before the Inception of the End

Quite a newborn act into the Australian scene, PUSTILENCE comes from Brisbaine with a debut EP where they deliver the goods in the traditional Death Metal style.
Four tracks in a bit over 15 minutes make this release an easy to listen and give time to album. Sound wise, it is what you would expect of a modern-day demo that someone took good care of at the time of mixing, yet, you can still hear "air" in it. There are a few things lacking in that sense, like a feeling of more "completeness". It works perfectly as an introduction card, but they must improve this aspect when it comes to future recordings.
"Gateways to Enigma" starts at full throttle with rather thrashy riffs, then dropping down into mid-paced, pretty simple power chords, followed up by higher speed riffing along skillful soloing and a more compact, traditional sound. Vocals come from underneath the mix in a haunting way. The track ends with some cool grooves and riffing reminiscent of the old school grindcore bands.
"Unto Pandemonium" is one of those songs based upon a heavy march-like riffing, very characteristic of the pure, original vein of DM which is noticeable in most of their executions. It sounds a bit saturated at times but nonetheless it still allows the listener to separate one thing from another. The thrashy riffing in this song actually made me think of LEGION OF THE DAMNED, although the vocal style is completely different.
"Journey to the Altar of the Unknowns" is a short, droning instrumental, followed up by the aggressive start of the final track "Dissolute Delirium". There is so much of the sound of the DM Demos tape trading era into this song and overall. Nice way to close up the EP with a powerful song that also offers us some really nice guitar solos, strong basslines and technical parts.
There is no other way to say it. This is plain Death Metal, with a lot of elements from the old school yet a particular identity of its own... Fans of the darker and filthier sound will absolutely enjoy this. I'm definitely going to be on the watch for a full length with improved production.
