Show My Mercy
Obsequial Joy
I could find very little information about Taiwan's OBSEQUIAL JOY other than they formed in 2015 but I do know one thing: they have released a solid slab of death/doom with the ep "Show My Mercy." With a runtime of 31 minutes made up of three full tracks plus and intro and interlude, this is a short but very sweet ride.
What has impressed me so much is their sense of melody and use of keys to heighten the atmosphere into pure waves of melancholic sadness. This is very "post" like and it mixes well with the death doom, which is quite striking and torturous. The intro opens with spoken word and a backdrop of simple but lush keys. More layers are added as it goes on and it bleeds over into the first full track "Helpless."
This song begins with more muffled spoken word and clean guitars that hit like drops of rain on a dismal cloudy afternoon. The bass is very melodic and provides a nice undercurrent for the song. The drums are able to help out this undercurrent while also laying down a strong foundation. The death growls are so deep but that is what you want for this style. The bass weaves in and put between the keys and clean guitar before choppy riffs kick in, accented by the keys. It all sounds so tragic and depressing, two moods and situations that doom and post are well versed in.
"因為太深所以淹死了" is lead by very moving and touch bass. This track is over eleven minutes long and every second tugs on the heart strings though I'm not sure what the song is about. But I do know the music is surreal as hell. The song moves at a glaciers pace but focuses on they keys moving the song forward while letting the guitar keep things heavy and dark. The guitar solo is a nice touch and surprisingly moving especially when the bass joins it. As the action rises, the song gets much more intense and the keyboards get much more crazy. The following passage is somewhat unnerving with the way the keys sound and it just gets more insane as the song continues.
"Mercy's Gate," is a keyboard only song that serves as a break between the doom but I didn't find it all that interesting. It just feels like it could be apart of something bigger. The final track "Hope" starts out brutal before taking a step back. The riffs are simple but effective at creating the doom backdrop. The keys and vocals work together well here for a two punch combination of beauty and darkness. As the song plays the riffs get more detailed and the song gathers its intensity and lets it break loose. "Show My Mercy," is a very promising piece of music that shows this band will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
