Nocturn - Like A Seed Of Dust album cover

Hailing from France, NOCTURN is a mixbag of a band fusing multitude of different styles while anchoring on the Death Metal with melodic and symphonic elements. "Like A Seed Of Dust" is the debut studio album of the band released on Sliptrick Records. They have also released a music video for the song "Le Belle" from the album.

The album starter "The Wraith In Bloodied Wings" begins with some enthusiastic synths and chimes. This is then incorporated into the band's aggressive melodic death metal instrumentation, Vincent's growls, and Sophie's clean vocals. More than adding to the band's overall sound and atmosphere, the keys here make the song feel one dimensional. But this is later compensated with a beatdown (?) section towards the end of the song.

"Pandemonium" is the song where the band really comes to life and displays the vastness and epic nature of their sound. Every step the band takes is right and the keys really complement the texture of the song. This is a true highlight track of the album. "Le Belle," the single off of the album gives a transparent view into the band's vision. Though this track lacks some of the strength of structure the previous song offered, this would tear through a crowd in a European festival. That is an environment where this band would thrive. This is also the song in which we begin to hear the more quirky elements of the album.

This is fully explored in later tracks like "Under The Darkest Sea," and "Wasted Earth".  But leaning towards the clean sort of sound does not do this band any favors, whenever they move towards it, the whole song falls rather flat. Where their sound truly shines is when they incorporate their beatdown like riffs and powerful leads with both the vocals complimenting each other, and minimal use of the synth. This brings us to the title track "Like A Seed Of Dust."

This is arguable the best track on the album. Sophie Burg's vocal truly breathes so much life into this track. This convinces the listener that she is an integral part of the sound of this band and to the future of the band.

NOCTURN is a band of great potential in a live setting and once they receive more exposure would rise to the top, and rightly so. They operate on the tropes of Melodic and Symphonic Extreme Metal and come out sounding good. Their sound could be on par with CHILDREN OF BODOM, or DARK TRANQUILTY. On this album, there is a lot lacking, it is a good debut nonetheless.
