HYDROGYN is an American Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band formed in Kentucky in 2003. Coming back from a hiatus with a new line-up, HYDROGYN is releasing their 11th full-length on October 30, 2020 through RFL Records. With three covers on this 13 track record, you get to hear not just the band and their sound, but how they honor those bands who inspired them. Spanning three separate genres, their choices for covers are eclectic and awesome.

The first track on the record is "Disappear", a catchy tune that begins with a short intro before launching into a killer riff. This song has an excellent bottom end. The drums and bass sometimes chug along under the guitars, but also stand out with little fills and variable rhythms that beef up the overall feel of the song. There is a lot to like about the lead off track.

The next notable track is the title track, "The Boiling Point". More melodic, it has a groove that is hard to pass up. I keep going back to this song. Holly's vocals, both clean and gruff are full of emotion and at times angst. What do you expect when someone has reached this point? You can feel the frustration the song evokes.

"Worthless Love" is that slow burn song that draws you in and makes you wonder who inspired the hurt the song makes you feel. "Sweet Addiction" and "Tragic" aren't necessarily follow songs speaking about the same relationship, but still have that relationship vibe. Much of this record feels like someone is either venting or lamenting about something or someone. With a ton of inter-personal discussion, this record is definitely an outlet record. I'm betting the listener will feel some catharsis as well. This is extremely relatable.

We have to mention the covers now. "One Way Or Another (BLONDIE)", "Suspicious Minds (ELVIS PRESLEY)" and "Mad World (TEARS FOR FEARS)" are three very disparate songs to choose. They all work though. None are straight copies of the original, rather all are interpreted to fit the sound this group espouses. These are well-done and very recognizable. They are also good choices. Even though they span three genres and three decades, they fit this record and this band.

And now for the fun part. My favorite song on this record is absolutely "Widowmaker". That guitar riff is the best on the record. The bass fills throughout are the top example of his skill on the instrument. The transitions are excellent. The guitar solo fits in the song without trying to stand alone and be the highlight. It is a well-balanced and well-performed song. On a record full of good songs, this is the one that will stick with me.

This record is a blend of a lot of things. The vocals go from bluesy to raspy, the guitars are fast and heavy when needed and melodic in the right places. The bass and drums lurk underneath, adding depth to the songs. The musical skills are apparent throughout and the songs are well-written. This is a very good record overall. It has a consistent feel, even though the songs fit multiple genres. I recommend this to fans of everything from blues rock to lovers of metal. It has broad appeal and really hits home everywhere it travels.
