Idolatria - Tetrabestiarchy album cover

Hailing from Italy, IDOLATRIA is a relatively new band in the Black Metal scene. From their Facebook page, "We are pure, yet defiled. We are definite, yet chaotic. We are conservative, yet innovators. We are IDOLATRIA. Black Metal since 2013." "Tetrabestiarchy" is the band's second album, and contains six tracks.

"Intro - Glorious Praise to the Tetrarchs" opens the album. It's a quick, one-minute mood setting instrumental. While soft but dark keys create a harrowing sound, church bells can be heard in the background, along with soft vocal moans. "Serpent - The Father of Darkness" is an eight-minute beast, opening with a slow riff and drums, getting ready to strike. Then, the all-encompassing chaos strikes. It's fairly traditional in sound, but also brings some new elements to the table. That quick riff change in the second half of the song is what I am talking about.

"Noctule - The Emperor of Scourge" is just under seven minutes. The intensity level the band brings to the table is noteworthy. But, they don't rest on the laurels of their forefathers. Take a closer listen to the intricacies of the guitar work, for example. The riff changes just before the half-way mark, to a frightening affair complete with eerie leads, and ends with dark clean guitar notes. "Goat - The Servant of Underworld" opens with scary and dissonant lead guitar notes that climb up and down that mountain of the underworld. The chaotic sound soon enters, with the drums rolling like a freight train. The guitars drive the sound here mostly. Lying in wait, it gathers steam for a final push.

"Vulture - The God of Last Rights" is an eight-minute beast. It takes a bit of experimenting before the main sound drops. It then moves slowly and cautiously, allowing for Lucifer to slip into your body. The vocals are unusual in that they are more like Death Metal than Black Metal. But the intensity of the music is marked. "Outro - Vibrant Flare of their Coming" closes the album. It's a short two-minute song with frightening ambient sounds, like what you might hear coming from the pit od Hades beneath you...but just a taste.

What separates IDOLATRIA from much of the rest of the Black Metal bands out there is their attention to detail. At first listen, they don't sound very different than the sea of Black Metal bands that are out there. But, peel lack the layers a bit, and you will find intricacies in their music that goes beyond the expected intensity, which is strong as well. They write smartly, and are not afraid of experimentalism, while maintaining the roots in the genre, which is very important as well. This is a band poised to take the genre by storm.
