AENEMICA was founded in October 2012. Before forming AENEMICA, all band members already played in several bands, which were acting primarily professional ambitious on German stages. Due to the various musical experiences which every band member has collected during this time, they decided to join to create a more flexible, tuneful and interesting style of music. Therefore there is a wide-ranging influence of musical styles and sounds in AENEMICA's music. The aim is to create a timeless and interesting sound and style, independent from any musical trend. AENEMICA themselves call their music "alternative-progressive-rock". The music is easier describable as "melodic rock with progressive influences." "Secret Lines" contains six tracks.

"Distant Light" leads off the album. Soft, clean tones open the song, with a pretty little melody. The thick chugging of guitars and bass comes just after the half-way mark. "Hollow" has a similar opening...soft and with clean vocals and just little guitar chords. The chugging guitar continue as the clean vocals stretch out into the upper ranges. I am getting the Progressive elements just fine but not so much the Alternative elements...I would agree that this is "melodic rock with Progressive influences."

"Back to Life" explores melody a little more. The chorus is big and rich, but could use more backing vocals to really bring it to life. At times, Daniel's lead vocals can be just a bit pitchy. This song has some high emotional elements as well. "Stay" opens with more of that dreamy and melancholy sound, but the guitars come in heavy and with big accents. It stays in the dark space throughout the song. "Just a few Lines" opens again with a sad tone and vocal moans. I am not sure where this song is headed, as multiple melody lines open up and it's hard to follow at times, though the lead guitar notes towards the end are nicely done.

"Reverie" closes the album, at over seven minutes in length. It opens with soft tones, before big guitar notes come in at the chorus. In the second verse, the guitars chug with a Djent tone. A big crescendo hits just before the half-way mark. This is what I am talking about. The extended instrumental passage is great...it follows the main melody line and then poignant piano notes lead the track to completion. Overall, fairly solid. The album does contain some high peaks but overall, it is mired in the "mid-tempo blues," where too many of the songs have the same pace. And the vocals...are just too one-dimensional for the most part. I like the heavy, chugging guitars, but the album lacks energy overall. Let's hope the band can make some improvements on the next album, because they have the musicianship to do so.
