Defeated Sanity

DEFEATED SANITY has a long and storied career. Originally forming in 1993, in Germany, DEFEATED SANITY would go on to make destructive waves in the death metal scene. Impressively founded by Lille Gruber and his father. They return with their new full-length album, "The Sanguinary Impetus". Much like their namesake, DEFEATED SANITY offers up a gut wrenching and face pummeling attack of brutal and technical death metal. "The Sanguinary Impetus" shows how the death metal genre has evolved over the years, and how DEFEATED SANITY can take the brutal old school sound of traditional death metal, and add some incredibly technical chops to make every track sound like an unrelenting attack on your sanity.
"Phytodigestion" begins with a simplistic one-two drum cadence that traverses into an absolute mental attack from the technical guitar riffing and speedy drums, all enhanced by the vile vocals of Josh Welshman. There is a groove element to the tonality of this track, that allows you to take a step back and appreciate the musicianship the band possesses, before destroying you once again with its brutality. There are times where the old school death metal sound finds its way into the fold, "Conceived Through Savagery", showcasing some of that sound initially. The old school sound is then elevated with the absolute chaotic technicality that DEFEATED SANITY can achieve. All the notes meticulously put together as a melting pot of brutal and technical superiority. There is a lot to say about the flow of this album, in the sense that there are times where the speed comes down a bit, allowing for the musicianship to truly shine, but that's not to say the technical aspect is lacking. It is quite the opposite. The technicality of the album just offers a better understanding of how DEFEATED SANITY can successfully bridge both gaps of flow and chaos.
"Insecta Incendium" is just a feverish pounding of technical mastery, but its astonishing to hear the level changes throughout the track, and how it works with every aspect of musicality. "Aboreously Transfixed" allows for the appreciation of that slower tempo to break through, with the constant hammering of brutality waiting in the shadows. I think it would be safe to say that DEFEATED SANITY has a little proggy feel to their technicality as well. The music is all over the place, but in a good way. "Drivelling Putrefaction" offers up a look at how DEFEATED SANITY orchestrates their musicianship, with an impressively concocted instrumental beginning, before the brutal nature of the band returns ten-fold.
"The Sanguinary Impetus" is a masterfully well done technical and brutal album. There are elements of old school death metal hidden within the chaos, and some prog-like influences, but not one overpowers the other. The musicianship is on point with delivering a technical wonderment. Hopefully, the Occupation Domination North American tour, canceled cause of Covid-19, is returning in 2021, so that everyone can bask in the technical brutality that DEFEATED SANITY would have provided with their support of ORIGIN and BENEATH THE MASSACRE. If you're a fan of those bands, then DEFEATED SANITY will be a welcome addition to your rotation. Pick this album up and bang your heads.
