Deceiver - Thrashing Heavy Metal album cover

DECEIVER? Are you kidding me? I didn't even know these guys were back together! It was about time to listen to something that stays away from the modern Metal standards on all aspects. Something that is kind of relevant to my daily playlist, and I guess DECEIVER is still the band it was, because sometimes a reunion features some not so pleasant changes in a band's music.

For all of you who haven't got a clue about this band, do not think that DECEIVER is an old, cult Metal band. Don't get confused with the reunion thing. The Swedish metallers were formed in 2004, managing to release an EP, a single CD and two full-length albums before they split up. DECEIVER now reunites just to release this album and return to its grave to rest. At least that's what its members claim...

The Swedish DECEIVER is an old school Thrash/Heavy Metal act loyal to the classic Heavy Metal formulas. Thrashing Heavy Metal, except for its really self-describing title, also features elements that many of you will find appealing, since I believe there are still many classic Metal listeners out there. Mixing traditional Thrash Metal with Heavy Metal produced by the bands many of us grew up listening to, one can trace references to titans like JUDAS PRIEST, VENOM, MERCYFUL FATE, as well as newer acts like MAZE OF TORMENT. Flesh's riffing could be a bit better at some parts, but I don't think these guys were aiming to create the album of the year.

The sound is also slightly weak, since Tommy Tagtgren attempted to surround the music with a raw old school aesthetic, but I guess that a bit clearer sound wouldn't spoil the atmosphere. Anyway, having an old school slightly brutal Thrash/Heavy base, Pete Flesh has laid his classic vocals full of screams and stuff. Do you want more?

I guess some of you do want more, and that's why I think this album is only for those who are into this kind of music and are still looking for old school little gems. I don't think that the rest of you will be that impressed by Thrashing Heavy Metal, and that's the reason why my rating will try to keep a balance between both sides...
