SENTRE is a 4 piece band from Belgium. Their aim is to create a new brand of Metal. I might say this is pretty difficult to do with hundreds of Metal subgenres as it is, but I can say that their first 4 song EP simply titled "Sentre EP" makes an excellent refreshing blend of Metalcore, Hardcore, Death Metal, with some Melodeath poured into a frosty glass, shaken not stirred.
"Herd" begins with some chuggy Hardcore style riffs, like a sudden punch in the face. The vocal contrast though is more in the vein of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE with the growled vocals then cleans at the chorus. The breakdown at the middle was expected, but it built up just right so it was so satisfying... although the outro was really rad as well with how they brought back similar riffs like the beginning. Definitely a bad ass opening track!
"Enraged Despair" is one angry track. The melody has that grit and bite that makes you want to break shit. There is also a few Death Metal elements in the pacing and riffs, which adds to the aggressive energy of this song. The title really fits how this song makes you feel as you listen. "The Stray" has some killer melodic riffs. I can also hear a lot of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH influence in this one, especially in the vocals.
"Odium" opens with some piano and a voice over I can't quite hear what's happening in. Then the riffs kick in and, once again, you can't help but to bang your head to the chuggy sound. This is, by far, the most emotional track of the 4; you can feel the pain, the emptiness, and the fury of abandonment in every word and the gritty and intense melody surrounding. The isolated vocals at the end are so raw with emotion, it was almost chilling. Quite a way to end any album, no matter the length.
Overall, SENTRE created an intriguing first EP. It really gives the listener a good idea on what kind of music they play and they held nothing back energetically. There was a lot of raw emotions evoked from vocalist Nick, but the music surrounding also added even more. I liked how the guitars would get more chaotic when anger was being expressed, slower during sadness... It's an emotional experience while listening all around. I'm not typically a Metalcore/Hardcore fan, but these guys found ways to make it much more interesting for me like the piano portions, the Death Metal elements and subtle electronic bits too. This is a solid first exposure to a band that could go to high places with their multi subgenre brand of Metal.
