Edge Of The World

Edge Of The World is the second album from a band who sound like they've stepped out of the metal era of the late 70's. U.F.O., MICHAEL SCHENKER, VAN HALEN, SCORPIONS, just some of the bands they list and boy do those influences shine, if your a fan of any of those bands or that genre, then you are going to love this album. The musicians are all long standing players in the metal community, this project came to life when John Adams and Jeff Vandenberghe met up for a reunion of their former band LESTAT, with a goal of "delivering melodic hard rock to the legions of fans hungry for this style of music."
The album opens with "We All Fall Down," a quintessential European metal anthem layered with American roots, comes across as that crossing point PANTERA found themselves in as they pushed themselves out of the 80's hair metal era and into the Hard Thrash most of us know the for. It is heavy, and the guitar solos would make Eddie Van Halen excited... "Start Beleiving" channels some Zack Wylde era Ozzy Osbourne with it's dark chord choices and guitar tone. The stick heavy to their roots but are not afraid to experiment in different styles. The title track "Edge Of The World" is a very classic 80's heavy metal piece, in the vein of JUDAS PRIEST", whereas "Psycho Ride" is very funky, like some SKID ROW, and then "Final Destination" exudes a dark and interesting soundscape built up by the guitars.
"Strange Kind Of Medicine" starts with a bango / steel guitar tone, before kicking into a country metal beat, complete with harmonica, a great mash up of American and British metal. "Sidewards Flight" has an intro that's akin to a slowed "Overkill", but with a shredding guitar lead reminisant of EXTREME's "Play With Me" over the heavy pounding of the double bass. The last track on the album "Southside Johnny" should, in my opinion, have been the first track, easily one of their strongest, this funky metal track had me singing along by the end. Reminds me heavily of SKID ROW's "Monkey Business" and "Slave To The Grind" but the lyrics have a similar theme to their "18 And Life". The rhythms between drums bass and guitar are deadly infectious.
There is a lot of great stuff on this album, they hold back on the tempo, giving it a pulsating thump, but I feel if they'd turned it up by 15-20 BPM it would have torn through the speakers. Excellent tracks which feel like a homage to the early years of British and American Heavy Metal from the 70's/80's. If you find yourself pinning of the pre-internet days of metal, then check out this album.
