KILLITOROUS is a 5-Piece Technical Death Metal band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This is a collaborative effort from members of SUFFOCATION, FIRST FRAGMENT and ANNIHILATOR. It still boggles my mind that they are still unsigned but I really think that won't last long honestly. As much as they are a more comical or comedy imposed band, they have some great musicians and they can put their money where there mouth is. Even though their approach is very comedic at best, it doesn't deter from the overall talent of the band even if they have a band name that has some double entendres! Some bands that don't take themselves too seriously in the genre seem to thrive the most from what I've heard throughout the years, hell GLORYHAMMER is probably the best Power Metal band out there and they have a more comical approach as well to the genre.
KILLITOROUS even did a song about Nicolas Cage's performance in The Wickerman over a decade or so ago. So any lyrical content is fair game to them and they wander off where they damn well please honestly. This time around they actually did a song of the legendary sitcom Married with Children and it makes for a rather interesting song to say the least even though you don't have a clue what are the lyrics through those guttural vocals.
The vocalist is probably the weakest point, there is no rhyme or reason and he doesn't really stand out from the rest of the album. I thought the other musicians in the band really shined throughout this album and the vocalist hurt the overall quality of the effort put on disk. You have some pretty awesome musicianship but its kind of overshadowed by a mediocre frontman. I think his voice does fit well with the rest of the band but it sounds so chaotic without a rhyme nor reason. He is the type of vocalist that gives me headaches and unfortunately was the case on this album.
The album is really well produced and when you have Chris Donaldson from The Grid at the helm, you know your band is going to sound great. Like I said beforehand, you have some great musicians and every member shines in his own way. Everything seems to be mixed with passion for the genre and it shows. They sound great even though the singer does get on my nerves on a number of times throughout this opus.
I like the humor-based songs and it's quite a departure from the elements of the genre itself but it's nothing to write home about. It's adequate at best yet a very talented group of musicians that has potential to do ever better things in the future.
