Wilczyca - Horda album cover

WILCZYCA is a black metal band from Poland. Originally formed in 2019, they wasted no time thrusting upon us their debut full-length album, "Wilczyca". WILCZYCA have some fierce black metal chops on them. Their vile black metal sound infuses a lot of unrelenting blast beats and fast guitar riffing to deliver a powerful sound. The opening track, "Na przeklętej ziemi", comes in delivering a purely atmospherically eerie instrumental before delivering a fierce black metal attack. There are some surprising electronic elements heard as an undertone as well. The track is misleading in nature, as you are to believe the tempo will remain slow, before it completely rips open. I can hear the thrash-like influences in the track, complete with the chanting vocal pattern.

"Ego Memini Inferno" shows off the musicianship of WILCZYCA with an impressive guitar solo. The track is a blistering sped-up black metal pummeling. The vocals of Nidhogg serving as the carrier of that evil sound. The title track for the album, "Wilczyca", has a definite groove to it. Like an evil rock and roll track from a video game soundtrack. The tempo had me bobbing my head, before the returning of that prototypical black metal sound. I love this track, because it had me wanting to dance and head bang all at once. Not something that is typical for any black metal band. There are some big surprises in the sounds of WILCZYCA.

They implement a sort of electro and industrial undertone for some of their tracks, but it works well. I found myself appreciating the break from the monotony that sometimes exists with listening to another typical black metal band. The track that showcases all this sound is, "Burza". It is a purely instrumental electro tinged creepy upbeat song. It seems that every track has a trick up its sleeve. Once I thought I had this band pegged, they come in with another surprise. A sort of rock and roll infused electro black metal style that becomes catchy, like in "Rok pierwszy". There are even some very interesting progressive elements that make it into the sound. "Przyjdź" brings in those progressively groovy sounds. By albums end I could very much surmise that WILCZYCA is not your typical black metal band, and I'm glad that they are not. Their sound is definitely unique, and for a debut album, a very welcome surprise.

"Wilczyca" is a shorter, but very succinct black metal triumph. The album has a lot of surprising musical elements within that bode well for the future sound of WILCZYCA. For a debut album, it is worth listening to. The production value hurts the score a little, but once they up that, there's no stopping them. I was thoroughly entertained throughout the listening of this one.
