Zero Elysium
Aeons Confer
After four prior EP's and one full length album, German Extreme Metal Band , AEONS CONFER, releases their sophomore full length album, "Zero Elysium"; a dystopian concept album. Based heavily in sci-fi, this album tells the story of a protagonist who encounters a specific scientific phenomenon that involves the earth's magnetic field being able to store energy units. The protagonist is able to figure out a solution, although it does not come in time as the giant asteroids crashing towards earth crumble. This destroys earth's surface, causing the protagonist to flee into the earth's crust. Running from heat waves, impacts, toxic acids and vapors. Meanwhile, humanity experiences that despite its advanced state technologically, they are limited and about to be destroyed. This is the story of its demise into a darkness that reigns forevermore.
"27 000 000 Years" - This is the introductory song, 46 seconds of anticipation building sounds. Reminiscent of a first flight into space's atmosphere. Intro songs frequently end up being favorite parts of an album for me as the anticipation building gives me chills sometimes. "Impactors" - A much harder song than the intro that led us here. With a very upbeat tune throughout and Bernhard Rigelsky sings some power-packed vocals. Both heavy and introspective, this song is part of the story this album is built upon. "Termination Artifacts" - Epic, metal drum beats by Nils Wrobel sets this song off the most. Blast beats mid song carry a swift current, to Bernhard Rigelsky's deep voice.
"Confront the Sum" - Electric guitar leads the way into a very trance-like beat, one it's easy to bob one's head to. Laden with bass, this would be one of those metal songs you can bump at high volume and feel shake you. "Zero Elysium" - The intro bass beat makes me want to dance and brings to mind flashing, colorful lights at a rave. Rolling right into symphonic vocal melodies, this is a kickass song. Altogether the quality of this album shines through in each individual creation.
AEONS CONFER gave us an amazing concept album to enjoy. Produced well, played well, and sung well. This is one of those albums you appreciate more with each listen. I feel like AEONS CONFER have put a lot of effort into creating a great listening experience and it shows. I especially like the bass beats in here. It is slightly different than your average Melodic Metal band, and a welcome change. I encourage more of this. All around, this album sounds epic.
