Kadar - Same Old World album cover

KADAR is a Progressive Death/Thrash Metal band based out of Kazakhstan. This will be a first for me, as I have never reviewed a band from Kazakhstan, and I have submitted over 1000 reviews in over six years of writing steadily now. Without a webpage, Facebook page, or any music on Bandcamp, it was rough gathering information on the band. I finally found some on Encyclopaedia Metallum. Formed in 2009, "Same Old World" is the band's debut album, and contains eleven tracks, one written in their native language which I cannot spell.

"Same Old World" leads off the album. It's an odd amalgam of Progressive Death Metal mixed with Thrash Metal. The vocals are gravely and the guitars are where the Prog elements come into play a bit, with the meter shifts. The guitar solo is fantastic. "Fear is Gone" has some deeper elements to move along the time changes. I didn't think it was possible to marry Progressive Metal with Thrash but somehow it works. "Question" opens with brooding clean guitars and a sense of darkness. Spoken word can be heard and is at times angry. From there the song moves forward slowly and with power. Bekkulov is a beast on those leads.

"Overdose" features heavy accents and some creative riffing. The vocals are varied here as well. The dark overtones work very well in this song. "Reflection" opens with a heavy riff and some powerful drumming. The riff is a bit more straightforward in this song. The vocals are thick and sound like they come from someone who has four legs, not two. This album is full of wonderful surprises. "Trigger of War" features some odd meters and it's clear the band has full compliment over their instrumentation. The cadence here is infectious as well. "The Gift" opens with bass guitar and the steady beeping of a hospital monitor. From there a dark rhythm develops. The vocals are again super deep.

"Don't Speak to Me" opens with a faster moving Thrash pace and rhythm. From there it shifts to a more powerful sound, and the spoken word vocals bring another element to the table. "Orohb pebonoun" closes the album, with a furious energy. It's more of a Thrash song than a Progressive Metal song but man can they mix the two quite well. It's actually kind of amazing that this bands exists and that they are from Kazakhstan and are unsigned. They meld two styles of Metal that just don't go together so well, and their command over their instruments is so strong. I think every Metalhead needs to hear this album, because it's something completely unique and so powerful.
