WAYWARD SONS released their debut album, "Ghosts Still To Come", in 2017 and now, they have released their newest album, "The Truth Ain't What It Used To Be" on October 11th, 2019. The band have been touring this summer around the United Kingdom, including an appearance at the Stonedeaf Festival, in August 2019. This reviewer had the pleasure of seeing them live at the festival and I have to say they put on a good show for the fans. The band have released this 12-track album, which is on the easy listening side of Heavy Metal. A quote from singer, guitarist and songwriter Toby Jepson describes the album as "a 'protest' record" and describes the new materials as "'political', but not of the sort that seeks to hammer the message home". There is a certain story-line to the songs on the album which can be noted throughout. The new album is a must for fans of WAYWARD SONS.
There are 12 tracks on the new album, out of which one is a hidden track. Noteworthy songs to listen out for on the album include the opening song "Any Other Way" - an easy-paced song shouting the line "Now I don't mind if you don't mind, let the music play. I wouldn't have it any other way". Catchy little number. Another song on the album that catches the attention is "Jokes On You", which at 3 minutes and 57 seconds in length, the song is almost a revenge song but one that's full of laughter. "Feel Good Hit" is another mighty song to sink your teeth into. Its instrumental opening is rocky and smooth at the same time. The 3 minutes 33 second-track is a must-hear song. "Feel Good Hit" is not one song to fade away easily. Another meaty song from "The Truth Ain't What It Used To Be" is "Long Line Of Pretenders". It is a song about being real in a world full of fakes. 3 minutes and 35 seconds of realness leaving a song not to be missed. You can hear the DAVID BOWIE and QUEEN influences in this song. Another song to listen out for is a song about beliefs and faith, "(If Only) God Was Real". A challenging song with roaring vocals!
In my opinion, WAYWARD SONS are a band who are on the right track to continue with their path towards the future. A band who not only produce a great studio album, but who also put on a great stage show for the fans. Truly a band who show that they are inspired by big names of past & present. A band who can keep the tempo throughout the entire album and still make the hidden track at the end sound as fresh as the opening song. I would say the band and the new album will certainly reach new heights as the gain exposure. If you are currently a WAYWARD SONS fan, then you will immensely enjoy the new album and if the band is new to you, then give the album a listen and watch out for future tour dates.
