Canadian Metalcore band CODE:LISA is here with their debut EP "White Whales" and is already out on all platforms as of September 6th and with that, they are just crushing through the Canadian Hardcore/Metal scene with this release. Formed in 2017 by Fabian Baudouin and Zackari Bourgeois CODE:LISA is from what I understand a formation of members of ex bands from the local Montreal area that have come together as one to start this project.
The album kicks off with "Etherized" and right away it begins with a groovy riff to start things off. The vocal ranges that are heard throughout this song really shows the extent of what Zackari Bourgeois can do. The catchy chorus isn't too much over the top and fits very well overall with the song. "Weep In Hell" changes things up a little. It still begins with a heavy riff as the intro but the vocals are more of an 80's 90's style of power metal mixed with early hardcore roots.
"Drowned Out" embraces the classic Hardcore and early 2000's metal in its sound and is probably my favorite track on the EP. Lots of breakdowns and two-steps throughout it is what helps make this song great but other than that nothing really stood out to me on this one. The final song on the EP is "A Gentle Thing" and it is full of energy and passion from the band. It is a song that I would love to see performed live.
All in all, for it being a debut EP I am quite impressed with how it sounded. Mainly because the band members have only been together since 2017, I know that all of them have had bands in the past and are no stranger to music or performing. But CODE:LISA I believe have the potential to keep going up and up from here and can continue to keep the hardcore sound alive in their scene. Check them out.
