Goatburner - Extreme Conditions album cover

GOATBURNER is a Finnish Death Metal band who incorporate Powerviolence and Sludge into their mix.  "Extreme Conditions" is their debut full length album; they also released the "Time To Burn" EP in 2018. This album is one of the more intense Death Metal albums I have reviewed this year.  From the first to last track, this is thirty three minutes of violent, extreme Death Metal that grips you and doesn't let you go.  All the brutality in the world doesn't matter if the songs just aren't there but GOATBURNER doesn't have that problem.  These ten tracks are stuffed to the brim with great riff after riff and drumming that has a dead eye on ferocity.

"Dead Alert," is the first track-it is just under two minutes but your dead by the time the song ends.  That opening riff is just absolute in its goal to crush you and if you somehow live through that, Kaos' insane vocal attack will make sure you don't get up again.  I also have to mention how well Spiders's drums work within the songs.  During the slower opening seconds of "Dead Alert," the drums take on that same approach of being heavy but with a slower tempo.  Soon as Spider screams kick in, so do the drums.  This duo really know each other's styles well and it is evident that they incorporate it into the very fabric of the songs.

"Mayhem," might just send you into such a state of mind with those riffs that just keep bashing against your skull.  The speed of this song starts off decent but just keeps escalating-just when I thought my ears couldn't take anymore, I get it shoved to me anyway.  By the time the song is almost over, the music takes an almost hypnotic state to me because their unwavering devotion to kicking ass is nothing short of pummeling.

My favorite parts of the album are the back to back tracks "Frozen Ground," and "Get Sick and Die."  These two tracks together make up for the very reason why we all love Death Metal in the first place and why your average human will never understand it.  "Frozen Ground," just drops this heavy riffs onto you from the start and the drums go out of their way to boggle your mind as they punch holes in it.  The riffs at about 45 seconds in are just....all encompassing.  Around the halfway point, a bit of old school groove finds its way into the killing fields but it does nothing to sedate but instead increases the rage that was already there.

"Get Sick and Die," is one of the darkest, intense tracks on an album is full of nothing but dark and intense tracks.  For two minutes and thirty seconds, the song has this steady burn that wraps around you but quickly turns damn near disorienting as it gets closer to the end.  The final track, "Wave of Doom," is just that: this unrelenting force that almost seems alive.  If there was any way to harness the sounds of approaching defeat, I would say it would sound something like this album closer.  This is my favorite track on the album and if someone asked me for the sickest DM around, I would suggest this song.

With "Extreme Conditions," GOATBURNER have crafted the most aptly title album of the year and one that goes over the top but never comes off as corny because of the deft song writing prowess contained with.  This is intense stuff, even for Death Metal.
