Hailing from Sweden, MYLINGAR unleashed their second full-length, "Döda Själar", on Aug. 2^nd, 2019. With just seven tracks clocking at 41 minutes, this album can be an interesting ride, especially if you're into HATE ETERNAL or BELPHEGOR-type riffs and just odd sounds altogether.

With this brand of Blackened Death Metal, MYLINGAR shows atmosphere and ferocity. The riffs are very fast and even borderline experimental, as odd tones and disharmonies ring out among this cavernous album. Each track has a multitude of riffs that seem to build and progress, only repeating a few staple verse riffs. All of the music is furious yet multi-dimensional.

"Obalansen" kicks the album off with atmosphere, quirky riffing and a very well-executed voice-over. The song is one of the better ones on the album, perfectly setting the tone for an album that sounds like the shrieks of prisoners shackled to a wall, the only thing to scratch being the very wood they are nailed to. With riffs sharp enough to lacerate, the rest of the album follows suit with 36 more minutes of intense savagery.

The whole album boils down to the 10-minute closer, "Förlusten". This track boasts serious chops of dissonant chords; however, it fails to maintain interest in the listener through its entirety. It isn't until about six minutes in when the lead guitar starts going crazy behind the vocalist and a doom-y break starts when interest is regained. The song drones on a while with relentless riff after relentless riff, and it becomes exhausting.

The riffs on this album, as I have stated already, are full of fury. However, none of them are quite memorable. "Mållösheten" is notable for its sense of atmosphere and above average riffing, but most of the other tracks are saved by their atmosphere alone. None of the angry, dissonant riffs really stand out.

Also, almost every track fits a formula: play fast, dissonant riffs until the end, which is where you place some sort of atmospheric section. It's not that this is a bad formula, it just becomes noticeable after a few songs.

The latest offering from MYLINGAR is a good listen when you're really angry. It has a cathartic edge to it. Otherwise, I find the album to be very uneventful. Despite some interesting riffs and nice atmospheres, there was only one track that I found particularly memorable, and that was the first track. Everything after that becomes a bit of a blur.
