Winterwolf - Lycanthropic Metal of Death album cover

WINTERWOLF are an old school finnish death metal band and this is their first album in just about a decade. The band was formed at the end of the 1990s but did not actually release their first album together until 2009 with "Cycle of the Werewolf" and they have finally returned for their anticipated follow up.

The album starts off with "The Crypt of the Werewolves" and if you couldn't tell already, this band loves their werewolf mythology so if you're into that, you're gonna have a good time. A nice short, bombastic opener to whet our beastly appetites for what's to come.

After the longer, but slightly more forgettable "At Dawn They Eat", the band fires back with "Brujo" which is one of the shorter tracks on the album but one with enough energy to keep the listener fired up for more.

"Devouring Entities Devour" was one of the singles released for the album and I can see why as this was an album highlight for me and something a bit different at this point as it had more of a doom metal, slow paced vibe which I really dug. This is also shown on the later track "Kadathian Doom" which, much like it's title suggests, is a longer, doomier song which I'd say the band seems to excel at the most as the other tracks just seem to blend in with one another without making too much of an impact. The production overall also isn't perfect but it does give the music a bit of an edge and gives most of the tracks here a feral sound to add to their appeal.

"Thisishispit" is another fun track I enjoyed more than most of the others as it had more of a thrash metal sound to it and a nice atmospheric intro to bring something a bit different to the table. This is one that would get a circle pit running wild.

Following on from my first listen of the album, I did find quite a bit of it to come across as forgettable with only half of the tracks bringing something worth talking about. The other songs certainly weren't bad and I'm sure others could find certain aspects to enjoy, but I sadly felt a bit disappointed with this offering even with a few tracks definitely worth checking out.
