WALKING CORPSE is a band out of Gothenburg, Sweden that is not a Melodic Death Metal band. In fact, they are Technical Grindcore similar to CEPHALIC CARNAGE. These Swedish grinders just released their debut, eight-minute long, self-titled EP.

This EP is essentially eight minutes of guitar wankery. Imagine early FIELDS OF ELYSIUM (before they went Progressive Death Metal) or maybe a less Grindcore BRAIN DRILL. It lacks substance and is not anything original or groundbreaking. However, to say this EP is a waste of time is inaccurate. Eight minutes is basically the amount of time I'm willing to spend with this sort of material.

That is not to say that this EP is worthless. From what I have heard in this genre, WALKING CORPSE are better than most of their Technical Grindcore peers. While there is hardly any substance in their music, usually bands like this don't have any substance at all. At least these guys have a little bit.

I think that the best riffs can be seen on "No Love", a song that nods to the concept of substance. The riffs are fast and relentless, capable of levelling a building, and the song progresses smoothly. "Harvesting Time" is also notable for its ability to slow down at one point. There is a section in this song that slows down to maybe 200 BPM an is relatively groovy.

From a songwriting standpoint, the songs on this album are not good. While there are themes and ideas, none of them are ever repeated. Some of these riffs would sound cool and would be more impactful if they were repeated. However, this is never the case.

WALKING CORPSE have potential. I mean they are obviously experienced musicians if they can play this technically and this fast simultaneously. I just think it wouldn't hurt them if they slowed down every so often. It doesn't always have to be fast and overly technical. It can also groove and riff. As I stated before, this band has moments like this, but they are far and few. Thus, they have the potential, and all they need to do is harness it.
