"Iridium" is the thirrd full-length release from Greece's CEREBRUM. Released on December 21st, 2018 via Transcending Obscurity Records, CEREBRUM gives the listener an onslaught of death metal with elements of prog and at times technical. "A Face Unknown" is a musical masterpiece in the vein of ATHIEST, CYNIC, and DEATH. The vocals are similar to TIAMAT's "The Astral Sleep". The instrumental sections are strong and seem diverse. Offering death metal, blasting, groove, a technicality and structure found in jazz or fusion. Pay attention to around the 3-minute mark. A nice groove that pleases the ears with enough technicality to be impressive and enough groove to not get lost.
"Memory Hoax", however, on the three-minute mark sounds as if there is a struggle to present something. But after waiting and waiting, the "something" never came. I am also finding that even for death metal the vocal sound isn't too appealing. Sounding like stifled speech masked behind a serious case of indigestion. "Cognitive Dissonance", an acoustic and somewhat soulful melodic piece reminded me of a band in a garage just impromptu. That kind of organized chaos. No real direction and not quite crafted yet. It really has the potential to go in so many different directions. But, that does make the title of the track seem fitting and just.
Overall "Iridium" became so repetitive that the intrigue I felt during the second and third track was long gone and mundane. There are cool little musical phrases that do stand out and are amazing, however, they aren't memorable enough to make the album stand upright on its own. The technicality they do demonstrate is very methodical, however, the few tricks just repeat themselves and never have anything more to offer. The audio production could be better and a really good mixing job may emphasize different parts and make them stand out a little better. Different strokes for different folks though and this album may really shine for some, but if you have a short attention span and/or like to be able to tell when one track ends and another begins, this likely isn't for you. Potential, yes. Dripping with it. This album is hopefully a stepping stone and will show CEREBRUM progress as they continue to grow.
