Icelandic rock trio THE VINTAGE CARAVAN's fourth album "Gateways" is out via Nuclear Blast (World)/Alda Music (Iceland) since August 31st. The band has been playing numerous festivals such as Roskilde (two times), Wacken Open Air (two times), Hellfest, Summer Breeze,... only to name a few. Even with an average of 24 years old, these youngsters knows how to rock and do it with a maturity older bands will never have. They play a blend of Classic Rock, Blues and Prog Rock. We don't have to wait long before we get bluesy heavy guitars displayed all over. The vocals of Óskar Logi are quite good and I can hear a little accent. Lyrics are in English. "Set you sight" is a faster LED ZEPPELIN,heavy modern rock with a medium vintage sound. Fast paced and very frenetic is that first track from these Icelandic rockers. Not that much of a long song but it opens the gates to rock quite firmly. YEAH. The second track "The Way" reminds of GRAVEYARD, to stay in the modern rock catalogue. I just can't believe these guys are that young for putting out such cool music. I love the production, it sounds enveloping and warm. Plenty of killer solos are offered here. The bass lines are groovy and moving as hell. The guitar riffs are reminiscent of WITCHCRAFT for me. Again i could name dozens of older bands but this one comes to mind first. Maybe cause they are a young band.
"Reflections" has more of a Progressive approach. I feel a DEEP PURPLE influence here too, quite good. This song is heavy and got a few vocal harmonies, the bass is prominent here: very fast and loud in the mix. Louder than the drum! Makes the bassist in me happy. The guitars are crazy in some moments but overall doing it the right way. Explosive moment. "On the Run's" intro is acoustic and relax but don't be fooled: a nice transition happens and we are going in a more rocking mood. This one breathes a little more and is catchy as hell. Kind of a power ballad but power really means it here. Around minute four we have a cool guitar solo. But after that I got a little tired and wanted the song to end soon. This one is eighties oriented. "All this Time" is the perfect song to rally people together in a live performance. A overused formula but it does the job. It has is place on this album. A great sing along song to warm the crowd, or the people in your pool party! Pretty good guitar work and drum too near the third minute. The bass acts like a beast too and have his glorious times too. "Hidden streams" has a strong European influence. Fast execution, killer vocals, backing vocals are amazing, the recording work of this song is impressive and very captivating. The songwriting is phenomenal but also it got a super boost from the mix and production skills used.
"Reset" is an excellent rock song.So much talent here. I may treat myself but, man these guys really know how to rock! A cheer up song very positive sounding, leaving you wanting to headbang and dance your way through the night. "Nebula" reminds me of a band called ASTRA. They are on Rise Above Records and i really like them. This one is one of my favorites. The drum parts are impressive and creative. Complex and catchy at the same time. Strong songwriting here. Very Progressive oriented. Amazing track. "Farewell" is a great blues rock song with cool riffs, and organ. So much potential and a really moving song. The last one "Tune" shows some major HENDRIX influence. A softer one to relax before the end. Many passages that's worth listening to, and a growing in intensity finale to end this classic rock impressive manifestation in such an amazing way. Immerse yourself in rock, go get a copy. Out since August 31st on Nuclear Blast.
