LEGION OF WOLVES was formed in 2009 by Annatar and Jason Connolly both ex ABADDON INCARNATE members. They were looking to get a band together that would recapture the extreme style of the many bands they grew up with in the 80's and 90's. "Bringers of the Dark Sleep" is the bands first album from Metal Scrap Records, the follow up to the self-released "Legio Lvporvm XIV" demo in 2014. The album starts out with an ominous fire crackling and a deep horn sound before jumping into "Bringers of the Dark Sleep". The song starts out heavy with guitars and drums finding a melodic but extreme sound. The vocals are guttural growls that work well with the music. The song definitely reminds me of many of the extreme bands from the 80's and 90's.
"Grond" starts out a lot lighter than the first track, but it soon picks up the speed. The guitars and drums again come across heavy but melodic. This is a definite headbanging song. The vocals again are guttural and harsh, but they work well with the music around them. This song also at times pulls back and gives the listener some really nice guitar riffs and drum beats. This shows the true musicianship of the band where they can interweave these sounds in with the heavy and extreme music. "Plague of the Immortal" is a balls to the wall heavy song. The drums and guitars don't let up from the beginning of the song. The band loses a little bit of the melodic sound for the heavy sound, but it is still a good song. The vocals take on a layering effect in this song that gives them an otherworldly sound which gives the whole song a more eerie sound.
"Summon the Elite" is another straight up heavy and extreme song. Honestly, I enjoy the songs where the band pulls back and allows themselves to be more melodic. This song like the one before loses that melodic sound when they try to get extremely heavy. There are instances that it comes back, but I think the whole song would have been better with more melody. They band ends the album with "Heavy Mass of Murder". This song starts out more slowly and somber than the other tracks before finding its footing and kicking in. This song is a good one to wrap up the album, it a good example of the bands ability to be heavy and melodic at the same time. There are points in the song they lose that because they are trying to go more extreme but overall, it's a good song.
I enjoyed "Bringers of the Dark Sleep" album. It was a good throwback to the extreme heavy bands of the 80's and 90's. I do wish the band would focus more on the melodic sound than trying to be straight up extreme. The songs that they do this I found more enjoyable than the really heavy songs. I am interested to see what the band does in the future.
