Nailblack - Envied album cover

NAILBLACK avoid the oversaturation of modern commercialism in their transcendent black metal. Influenced by the genre's classics - MAYHEM, IMPALED NAZERENE, BATHORY, SATYRICON and VENOM, they release their album "Envied".  The album's first single "Pig Digger" is streaming at REDEFINING DARKNESS RECORDS, which Rob Void has described in this way -

"As with a good deal of our lyrics, Pig Digger, was basically written about gods being nothing more than men and the power they hold over the weak. It also speaks of how all of life's answers will never be known to this life, and will only be revealed once you die. True freedom from worldly oppression can never be experienced until then"

Taking a listen to the "Envied" album begins with a fast storm of darkness in crusty distortion. "Promises" has a jumpy, rhythmic backing to it, tearing away with a consistent pace. Tom fills have marching moments along with the repeated tearing of the guitar. I noticed how this music is grainy in sound, like charcoal on wood. "Pig Digger" attacks with speed and aggression. Dark and muddy in sound, its cunning vocal growls and sustained guitar stretches panning out towards the ending of the track. I feel this song matches the dark sentiment of the track that Rob Void describes.  The finale track "Steps into Infinity" starts with a melancholic muted guitar intro, flowing into a heart-grabbing flow of harsh percussive vocals and catchy instrumental moments. The repeated melody of a muted guitar steps in and out of the track, like a taunting ghost in the room. To me, this last track makes the greatest catastrophic impact, leaving a haunting end to the album.

The "Envied" album achieves an encompassing dark and messy mood. I have enjoyed the spirit of NAILBLACK and their atmosphere, though I'd like to hear further explorations in their sound. I think they have great potential in the future to venture further in the dark chasms of black metal, with their recent resurrection.
