Progressive Black Metal trio PROSTITUTION formed in New York City, USA. To date, they have released three EPs; the latest here titled "Egyptian Blue" contains three extended tracks. Black Metal might be the most diverse genre of Metal today. If you feel asleep following the "Second Wave of Black Metal," it's time to wake yourself up, brush yourself off, and get back out in the game. In this current decade, the genre has split into many new factions, and offer the listener a veritable sea of opportunities to discover new ways of interpreting the genre. With this in mind, let's find out what PROSTITUTION's "Egyptian Blue" is all about.

"Hypergiant" comes in at over six minutes. A blood-curling opening scream announces an intense track to follow. That "wall of sound" comes in as well, common to the roots of the genre, as well as a two-step riff that goes down a half note and then back up. But, there are some riff changes here and there and some Progressive elements present as well, especially in some unconventional chord structures. You can also pick up on some intelligent songwriting. "The Boat" is closer to the Progressive genre from the start, though the incensed vocals keep a maddening Black Metal sound weaving throughout. Instrumentally I sometimes get a GOJIRA vibe here, from the rhythms, accents, and chord progressions. The combination of these two styles is unlike anything I have heard in a while.

"Elated Droves" is the eight-minute closer on the EP. Pig squeals litter the track here and there, and a darkness pervades the sound. The vocals are again very aggressive and agonizing, while the instrumentation is varied. The resulting sound is cold, sterile and hopeless, like you are living in an endless state of winter where the sun never rises. Three songs were probably just enough for you to get a sense of what the band and album are all about. However, it did leave me a bit intrigued and with a few unanswered questions. The final mix here is very unique. I enjoyed it for sure, and have a feeling that this is a band to keep an eye on for a future full-length.
