My Regime - Deranged Patterns album cover

A relatively young thrash group, MY REGIME from Småland, Sweden, made their debut the same year with "Dogmas" before releasing "Deranged Patterns" in 2017. From the opening notes of "Time Slipping Out Of Tune", MY REGIME sound very much like a technical death metal group - an early variant like ATHEIST where the thrash influences were still very much in evidence. The squiggly shred on "Rays of Gray" and "I Am" is particularly demonstrative. Equally thrashy is the commitment to the persistent, unrelenting staccato rhythm. That being said, MY REGIME occasionally stray from this formula. Parts of this album also sound quite a lot like BOLT THROWER: the chorus of "The Sound of Dying Dream" and parts of "The Cage" in particular. Occasionally, as in "Surreal Reality", MY REGIME revert to a mid-tempo chug somewhere between traditional power metal and standard death metal.

The songs are distinct entities, but they're often repetitive. "Nervous Fort" is one of the worst offenders, but "Smiling Dog", which promised to be my favorite track on the album for its more flowing nature, fields about three riffs and cycles mechanically between them in such a way as to entirely water down its promise. The thrashy nature of the choruses (that is to say, short) contributes quite a lot to this. "Silver" is a nice change of pace, a brief acoustic number with a hauntingly resonant production that makes the most of low bass notes.

Nonetheless, "Deranged Patterns" is by the standards of neo-thrash fairly good. It's neither a laborious imitation of its predecessors nor an embarrassing reinterpretation, which already puts it head and shoulders above other bands in the field. The repetition is de rigeur in thrash, and given that the album does at least regularly engage with a strong sense of rhythm. The songs aren't necessarily memorable, but each is a coherent assault on the senses and in this genre that's the name of the game.
