Christian Power Metal band NARNIA have returned to the limelight once again with a brand new self-titled album. Following the release of their last album "Course Of A Generation", NARNIA took four-year-long hiatus, however, the band eventually reunited in 2014, and finally surprised long-time fans with the deliverance of their seventh studio album "Narnia" in 2017. Featuring Christian lyrical themes and an overall exciting display of memorable musical performances, this album contains nine brand new tracks; with two bonus tracks included on the Digipak edition of this album, which are a 2017 version of "Living Water" and a new instrumental track "Utvandrarna".
Uplifting and determined, fast opener "Reaching For The Top" is guaranteed to get you pumped. Christian possesses a great set of pipes, belting out each note effortlessly and the drum beats along with the riffs are fast and electrifying, further enriching the optimistic mood of this track. "I Still Believe" is an enchanting tune that captures the hearts of listeners with its catchy rhythm; it is a song about expressing one's undying devotion towards his faith. "On The Highest Mountain" marks a slowing down of tempo, but that does not reduce the epic quality of this tune.
The power ballad "Thank You" is a poignant ode to God. Christian delivers this sentimental track to a wonderful extent, opting for a soft and tranquil approach in his vocal performance. The guitar solo within this track, however, is the showstopper. Passionate, highly emotional and delivered masterfully by CJ Grimmark, it perfectly reflects the very nature of this song (and the album). Despite having a chorus that bears some similarities to that of "I Still Believe", "One Way To The Promised Land" is still a solid track on its own. The upbeat "Messengers" exudes a positive vibe, while "Set The World On Fire" retains the usual catchiness of NARNIA's songs, featuring an unforgettable chorus and high-octane riffs.
The first bonus track, "Living Water", was originally recorded for the band's 1999 album "Long Live The King" and is given a makeover on this album. In the 2017 version, the backing vocals are gone and Christian's vocals are much clearer and more prominent in comparison to the original, but aside from these changes, the essence of the original tune remains. This new version also features guest keyboardist Jens Johansson (STRATOVARIUS, RAINBOW, ex-DIO), where he displays his excellent keyboarding skills alongside guitarist CJ. The serene "Utvandrarna" - which features only a keyboard solo - is an embodiment of "less is more", as this is sufficient to make a moving tune.
NARNIA have definitely made a strong comeback to the Metal industry. The band's self-titled album is a wholesome listening experience with its catchy compositions, powerful vocals and incredible guitar solos. NARNIA's latest album does not disappoint. The lion roars again!
