Oh Deer God

WIDOWS' latest production, "Oh Deer God" delivers a generous heap of sludge metal with a coat of southern blues and groove. Characterised by mid-tempo melodies, unforgiving blast beats and in-your-face growls and screams, the Nottingham band is certainly gaining attention within the metal scene. The quartet includes guitarist James Kidd, vocalist Adam Jolliffe, drummer Ze Big and bassist and backing vocalist Phil Emblin.
"Oh Deer God" commences with its titular track, a groovy yet aggressive tune filled with screams and gutturals which later ends with a deep and heavy solo. Adam's powerful yet harsh voice rips through the track. The shortest track on this album, "Caffeine and Hatred" (lasting less than 2 minutes) also happens to be the most impulsive. It is an incredibly distorted sludge metal affair and is fast and aggressive to the core. Adam's screams cuts through the air along with the introduction of riffs and bass hooks. Similar to its predecessor, "Heresy and Venom" is another track that pummels you to the core, despite its occasional catchiness. Adam blends growls and husky singing in this track to a positive effect, bringing a strong sense of seriousness to the track.
"Ride to the Realm of Coitus" is a serious sludge metal affair dusted with a tinge of blues rock. Characterized by dynamic chord progressions and hypnotic beats, it starts off with an ultra-heavy bass drop and a down-tempo intro. The guttural vocals squash the prior calmness of the tune, leading to a soundscape of heaviness and abrasion. I personally find the blues rock influence near the end of the song to be a great addition to this song, and the band bridges the transitions between these two musical genres really well.
Like the previous track, "Blue Tina" is a concoction made up of blues chords and sludge metal riffs. Gravelly vocals are ever present within this tune. "Oh Deer God" closes off with "Germanium Buzz", a rather interesting tune that starts off with a catchy clean vocal passage that is reminiscent of blues songs. The song soon crescendos into a combination of aggressive vocals, groovy riffs and rhythmic drum beats before flowing towards a distorted outro. "Oh Deer God" by WIDOWS is noted for its remarkably catchy grooves and highly aggressive melodies. It sure packs a punch and despite the bizarre song titles, it does not disappoint in delivering a plentiful dose of metal and blues.
