Soulrot - Nameless Hideous Manifestations album cover

Hello ghouls and ghoulettes (Cis-ghouls?)! Welcome to the theme park we call Death Metal. That's right it's everyone's favorite musical sideshow. Don't live with that eternal hate, come on in and enjoy the depravity of virulent proportions! Bring your little spawns of possession, eat a corn dog, lineup to hammer smash the face, fill the severed head balloon with blood from your blood gun, nothing makes sense here! Are you looking for a daring new exciting thrill? Well you've tried all the rides have you? What about... Oh goodness, the smell is awful... What is that hideous stench you ask? Well, slurping forth from unfathomable depths it's SOULROT! Let's take a gander.

Ok, so the nuts and bolts: this is standard Death Metal that may not break any new ground or push any boundaries but will still deliver up a hefty heaping serving of heavy. The overall mixing makes this sound like it was produced in the late 90's or Early 2000's. It's a little muted with a very fuzzy almost chainsaw like guitar tone. The riffs sound fantastic in this style, the drumming is great albeit a little less impactful due to the mixing. I would have loved to hear a real thunderous boom from some of those rolls. The bass, however, is nice and grimy. It's a very thick rumble that intros a few of the songs nicely. I bet this band kills it live.

Without any fancy bells and whistles here, it's strictly a meat and potato Death Metal release. Only real fans need apply. The album starts out with an intro track that's basically random monster noises. After that you get into some decent grinding riffs that pretty much set the tone for the album.

The eight song "Incorporeal Autopsy" (Which would be impossible, right? Dissecting a body that isn't there?) features a sweet solo that unfortunately isn't rivaled much by anything else on the album except for a minor lead in "Infertile Anti-Womb" (Code word for butt?). There are, however, some great head banging parts throughout (Which is really all we're after, right?). I dug the finger-y ominous riffs in "Those Who Dwell In The Abyss". "Ectoplasmic Revelations" adds some spooky noises later on that work nicely to enhance the atmosphere of the stuttering, suffocating rhythm. A few more electronic touches may have helped, however, I get avoiding relying on samples and laser noises in music that's about being heavy.

So, what else is there to say really? The blasts and roars are all where they should be, the monster noises are monstrous, and the guitars are guitar-y? Do I recommend this ride? Meh give or take personally. As much as I'm a fan of Death Metal, I wasn't immediately grasped by the madness. I enjoy this album and will definitely have it in the shuffle, but I don't know that it's a standout. Fans of ENTOMBED will be right at home. There were elements of IMPETIGO. I was reminded of the bands VOMITORY and FLESHCRAWL, though not quite as harsh on the vocals, more guttural.

It's a solid release if you're looking for more Death Metal but don't expect anything fancy. If this was a rollercoaster it would have ups and downs but no loopy-dee-loops or twisty-spin-y parts or those 3-D curly-cues that sometimes go awry and launch some guy into the neighboring town or whatever. Whatever your choice, make sure you get some funnel cake on the way out.
