Many bands do covers of their favorite bands or albums. Sometimes those covers are actually better than the original songs. So, you can say, I like listening to covers. But it is completely different listening to one or two covers, from listening to an album only with covers! Well, ATROCITY's new album is one of those.
ATROCITY was born in 1985 and recorded their first demo in 1988. The EP Blue Blood saw the light a year later, followed by a concept album about drug use named Hallucinations. Their second album Todessehnsucht ventured into Death Metal, featuring a cover of Archangel by DEATH. From then on, the band started exploring other fields. In 1996 the band released Willenskraft and introduced industrial elements. Then it was Werk 80's turn, featuring versions of 80's Disco hits. After some odd MCDs and only one full-length album, Atlantis, I was waiting to listen to something else than covers only.
There are a lot of ways for a band to be in the forefront. The best one are live shows and new albums or a single. ATROCITY is releasing a new album. New? Well it is a new release, yes, but not with songs of their own. You will listen only covers from some well known songs from the 80's and the usual irritating voise-©over. I know most of the songs in this album and in my opinion, ATROCITY didn't manage to give that something. OK, you will listen to heavy guitars and some growls, but overall this is an album that I still try to find out the reason of its existence! It has its good moments, like Don't You Forget About Me and some others that  Krull's voice reminded me of Ville Valo! And that's not good at all. The instrumentation is not even close to nice and some songs were played better from other bands in the past. Just check Smalltown Boy in this album and then e.g. listen to the cover that PARADISE LOST did.
As a conclusion? The truth is that I hate full cover albums. I really do. For me there is no reason for those albums to exist! I tried hard to be as undiscriminating as I can be and I think I was. But unfortunately this album is not good at all. I think you'd better listen to the original compositions. The album takes one extra point only for the cover. We love Dita von Teese!
