It's hard to fathom but this may be my second time reviewing a band from my own country! It's another female fronted Metal band. It's incredible what we have had these last ten years or so. Back in the late 90's, you only have a few bands that gave the chance to female vocalists to really shine, bands like THE GATHERING and LACUNA COIL. I can safely say that this is not a case of matter over mind. EVEREAL chose Stephanie Neufeld as their vocalist because she has a tremendous talent, that goes way before any smoke and mirrors. She is quite cute but she has one hell of a voice and she is to be taken seriously.
This is the first full-length album from the British Colombia band. They are mostly a Symphonic Metal band with some Adult Oriented Rock thrown in for good measure. You have some really catchy songs that reminded of DELAIN and AMARANTHE but you have some songs that drag on a bit and made me remember another female fronted band by the name of ECHOES OF ETERNITY. They were a band that was meant to have a great impact but their releases fell flat. Nonetheless, EVEREAL do have that catchy sound on some songs, especially on ''Frost Sign'' and ''Darkness''. ''Darkness'' for a song that has that title, well it's actually one of the more upbeat songs off of this album. Maybe it's because its after two mid-tempo songs in ''Veil'' and ''Wish'' but this song is the one that really caught my attention.
Stephanie Neufeld is really able to charm the audience with her prowess. She has a pretty good range and a lot of power and emotion. You can really feel that she gives 110% in every song. I really loved the fact that she doesn't sound like an opera singer like many bands of the genre like XANDRIA or EPICA. I don't really like opera and it does get on my nerves a bit. Thankfully she can showcase all her talents in a way that is not aggressive like opera. I never really was able to grasp the notion of the mix between Opera and Metal but to each his own.
The opener is a great example of what they are capable of. I know the genre has a lot of great bands in it, it's some pretty solid competition. I think they add a bit more of progressive metal elements than most of the bands in the genre and subgenre. I loved the guitar work on ''Psycho'' and thought it was a departure from the genre. I would have loved a more solid composition as a whole though. Let me explain, it would have been awesome to have a more consistent album. I would have left out the two mid-tempo songs and would have chosen something a bit longer than could showcase all of the members of the band.
You have a great backing band but I felt they didn't shine as much as I would have liked. Still, they have loads of potential. A bright spot in a genre that is blooming exponentially these last few years!
