Italian Death Metal band, NO MORE FEAR, was formed in the year 1996 and the band quickly released a demo in the year 1998 entitled, "Shouts of War". A full length studio debut album, "Visions of Irrationality", saw the light of the day in the year 2000. A split CD with fellow Italian Death Metal band, SIN DRIVEN TIDE, was released in the year 2004 and the band also were successful in putting out their second album in 2007 entitled, "Ethnoprison". The band started out as a Thrash Metal band with influences of Death metal at their inception. As they grew as a band and as musicians their music began to be more inclined toward the European Melodic Death Metal genre. By the year 2009, the band began to change musical direction and moved towards the direction of Death Metal with Italian folk influences. The band also settled on a stable line-up before releasing "Mad(e) in Italy", in the year 2012, which was greeted with critical acclaim. The bands made a change of drummers and have released their latest offering "Malamente" which translates from Italian to English as "to come to bad end".
The album kicks off proceedings with "Morte e Orazione", a brief instrumental acoustic track that has classical disposition. The acoustic guitar is joined by a somber electric guitar that sounds like the soundtrack to a cowboy spaghetti western movie. The second track on the album is "Mare Mortum", and it is almost an extension of the first song in the beginning. As the guitars get louder and drums are introduced to the song, raspy lead vocals hitch on to the melody. A gentle guitar section and clean vocals occupy the mid section, which is quickly followed by a spoken word bit. The song turns into a Melodic Death Metal affair before a short acoustic piece gives it its ending. Nestled smack in the middle of the album is "A Sinister Murder Case", a concise acoustic track and it is just over a minute long in runtime. The song is actually a surprising inclusion in the album given the fact that the preceding songs were quite brutal in nature. The brief solo track gives a respite from the proceeding and it showcases the variety of the album. "Lady 'Ndrangheta" is a brisk track that starts off with a simple folk-ish melody set to marching drums and before the first minute is through, familiar Death Metal growls and a heavier melody occupy the airways. The track builds on the Folk melody and the song has a superlative lead guitar solo incorporated in it. "Conferimento Della Santa" is the last track of the album and its starts off with a haunting acoustic guitar melody. This song has spoken a word part that is supposed to be the secret oath of affiliates to the Italian mob. The outro to this song is almost comical in nature that sounds like the soundtrack to a comedic act and is contradictory to the mood of the song.
NO MORE FEAR manages to, quite comfortably, put together Death Metal and Folk music into a space that astonishes the listener. Unconventional songs are put together with classical melodies that give the tracks an extra dimension. The music is technical and the compositions of the tracks are interesting. The music oscillates between Heavy/Death Metal leanings to slow gentle acoustic parts and spoken words which could lead the listener astray. The album also boasts of killer artwork done by Daivde Mancini of Dartworks who nails the vision of the band to turn stories of criminal organization that the band sings about into a visual masterstroke. NO MORE FEAR is slated to perform a string of dates around Europe next year. This album is a definite recommend to fans of Death Metal fans that also appreciate the intricacies of Classical/Folk music.<
