SUNTERRA is an Industrial, Technocore Metal band from Austria. They were born in 1998, but re-emerged in 2015 after a decade long break. With their new line-up in place they released their latest "REBORN" in January 2017. This album comes in with six tracks and a listening time of about 27 and half minutes.

The opening track "Reign Supreme" is so heavy. Its blast beats meet slowed down DJ work in an awkward but enthralling way. The male vocals come in with grungy, deep and dark tones ripping into your very soul. The female vocals are angelic and a welcome contrast. The track makes me want to head bang and dance all at the same time. The guitars are muted a bit and the bass as the depth that the synths lack. "Shadow In The Dark" starts out much sweeter but has a cryptic feel as the impending change breaks through. It's similar to the gates of hell opening, with a bit of Techno thrown in for ambiance. The female vocals burst through. There are Folk elements riddled in and out of this track. This is probably the darkest, yet enlightening track on "Reborn". That classic Industrial feel stays true with repeating guitars and guttural vocals.

Track three, "Lord Of Lie" is another super interesting track that keeps the mysterious feel. The creepy vocals that accompany the female vocals add just enough strangeness to this one to keep the bands vibe. This track reminds of a video game where the boss is the feminine beauty and her hell demons are after you and she commands them with the beauty of her voice. It is another mix match track that has so much appeal to it.  Then we enter "This Is W.A.R" which sounds like a roller rink track in the beginning. While the track does harden, I can't get passed the opening. There is a beautiful key piece and the guitars are so low and enchanting. This track falls victim to being overdone. While there is so much to love in this track, adding it all together in one track creates a dizzying overload of elements.

"Ministry Of Thoughts", track five, begins with chains. Well not really, but it totally makes me think of a boiler room full of big sweaty men working, chained together, covered in soot. This is probably one of my favorite tracks in the album. The vocals are completely guttural and gruesome. The Technocore is toned down and the Metal is toned up in a complete and expertly implemented piece work. While the previous track was overloaded with mixing elements, this track flips the coin 180 degrees and creates something that almost all metal-heads would find enjoyable. The final track "Shut Up!" comes in low and has a much more Atmospheric feel. The vocals are soft and spoken directly to each other at the start. Then the deep growled vocals arise, but the female vocals are there too, except they are far from angelic. It is completely unique. The bass and guitar work impeccably together in this track. I almost missed it as all the other elements fell over me, but this track really does show their excellent musicianship.

I've never really experienced something quite like this one before. The male vocals are deep and dark, the female vocals are opera-esque. Being not that different from the most common female and male Metal vocal contrasts. However, the music is so, so different to me. This is definitely something I could see playing at a rave, but is still a true Metal album. SUNTERRA is a unique mix of Metal and Techo, and if you want to try something a little off the wall, "Reborn" is a cool place to start. I was pleasantly surprised.
