Memento Mori
Sahg
SAHG is a Doom Metal band formed in Hordaland, Norway, in 2004. Four previous full-length albums had been release before "Memento Mori," which contains eight new tracks. Two new band members joined the fold for this "Stoned and Doomed" Heavy Metal plate. "Black Unicorn" opens with trippy guitar notes, heavy with reverb, and a psychedelic, downtrodden sound. It lumbers heavily for over six minutes, and as each note strikes the ground it leaves a hole with no bottom. The guitar effects are truly out of this world. "Devilspeed" is fast moving for a Doom song, but the elements of the genre are maintained throughout. You don't often hear a chorus in this style but they lay out a nice one here.
"Take It To The Grave" shows good diversity in the band's songwriting repertoire, with a depressing song that uses both quiet and more sonorous passages to deliver the message that we are all destined to return to the earth. "Sanctimony" is the longest song on the album, at over seven minutes. What Doom Metal album would be complete without some drawn out tunes that allow the despondence to creep in slowly? Like water seeping into a crevasse, it takes time before it completely fills the space, but it eventually will. "Praise The Electric Sun" is, dare I say, a bright spot in the grey? Oh and it fits so well as a break to the earlier tracks which were just rich with Doom. This pretty acoustical number takes me back to a time when music was easier to enjoy.
"Travelers Of Space And Light" is really unlike anything I have heard before. Sure, at its core you could call his hazy Doom Metal but they really work in some outside elements to make it their unique composition. The drum strikes thud in your ears while the vocals reach high in the spires. "Blood Of Oceans" is the closing track. There is a nice, ominous build-up, like the distant rumble of an approaching army that will send you to your maker. The main riff is downright bossy, and poised to level everything in its path. I've heard a lot of Doom Metal that sometimes just doesn't peak my interest, but that is definitely not the case here. The album takes you on a trip to an alternate plane of existence...one that is fraught with peril but it's exciting at the same time. The diversity on the album is what makes it as good as it is. "Memento Mori" is something you going to want to hear.
