Big Rocks
Krokus
KROKUS is a band that, similar to ACCEPT, bring the metal but they mix it up with a straight forward Hard Rock sound, like a Metal version of AC/DC. As far as covers album, they are usually hit or miss...with miss being the usual verdict. However, KROKUS' covers album is pretty good. The songs sound like the originals but without a doubt adds KROKUS' signature flair. It probably goes without saying but all the songs are heavier than their real counterparts. "NIB", by the mighty SABBATH, actually manages to rival the original in heaviness but for some reason they don't play the whole song, which is obviously a let down.
Another cover, of QUEEN'S "Tie Your Mother Down," is pointless when you consider that there isn't any possible way Marc's vocals can ever be as good as Mercury's. I know it's a cover and it isn't always the point to sound just like the original, but come on...no one can do QUEEN except QUEEN. It is also very odd there isn't an AC/DC cover, an obvious influence on the band. Marc's voice, while not by any definition full of range, actually improves a lot of the songs. "The House of the Rising Sun" sounds a little more tragic due to his natural grit. NEIL YOUNG'S "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World" is a song that was immediately ruined by Young's awful, awful voice but Marc nails it and makes it listenable for the first time in music history. Fernando, Mandy, and Mark provide a triple guitar attack. I'm not sure if three guitars are needed all the time but some of the tracks it really works well. The guitar's wall of sound really makes "Born To Be Wild" feel brand new again, especially when you consider its one of the most overrated and overplayed songs in the world. Flavio's drumming is spot on. Depending how simple the songs being covered are, sometimes the playing is a bit too basic but that isn't his fault. However he really does show his chops on the LED ZEPPELIN cover "Whole Lotta Love", sounding pretty close to Bonham.
All in all, this is a decent covers album but I'ts hard to rate them high. KROKUS is an awesome band but you can only do so much when playing another band's music.
