MOTOROWL is a Psychedelic Doom Rock band based out of Germany. I wasn't able to garner much about them as a band or their history, but as far as I can tell, this is their debut LP, entitled "Om Generator," and contains eight tracks. The opening title track is dark, heavy and with brooding strength, complete with vocal harmonies that seem out of place with the music, yet stand to create their unique sound. They "jam" it out towards the end, with a simple but effective riff. "The Highest City, Part One" begins with an organ melody that cuts against a hard riff, like something you might have heard from THE DOORS back in the day. Light-hearted but earnest at the same time, the Doom elements shine well here. "Part Two" is shorter and prettier in nature. I wouldn't call it a ballad per se, but that five-note melody line sure is catchy and satisfying. "Old Man's Maze" is more ferocious and foreboding, like the pale rider "Death" cresting a hill coming to take away the rest of your days in one fell swoop. Yet, in the end he spares you, choosing to allow the beauty of nothingness to live just a little while longer.

"Beloved Whale" is an odd title for what is an eccentric track indeed. Slow and deliberate, it sparkles softly with acoustic guitars, and a there is a tale within that is central to the song. A love song, or a song of loss perhaps? The dark turn at the half-way mark suggest the latter, as the vocals hit high emotional lamentations. "White Horse" is by contrast a fairly straightforward three-minute rocker with one main riff that they slather on the listener like a thick icing on a pastry. "Spiritual Healing" is the eight-minute closer. This lumbering giant might sum up the album best and most completely, using varied instrumentation and effects and gathering bits and pieces of songwriting from earlier tracks that keep it both vital and memorable.

For the genre, I find the album quite interesting and unique. It's not as simple and describing it as an album with a sound from the 60's or 70's alone, as the band has worked in many other sounds to make this product uniquely theirs. I feel like I took a trip to a new dimension but with my eyes open and consciousness intact. It's mellow but powerful at the same time, and oozes with the band's inner soul.
