Rain - Spacepirates album cover

RAIN is a Heavy Metal/Power Metal band based out of Italy, and one of the longest running acts in the country. Formed in 1980, "Spacepirates" is the band's eighth full-length release, and contains nine tracks. The title track leads off the album. It has a classic NWOBHM riff but with the familiar gallop of Power Metal. The vocals stay mid-range for the most part, and with harmonies. There isn't a lot of meat however in terms of total instrumentation...it's fairly thin though the riff is catchy and the guitar solo sparkles. "Not Dead Yet" has a nice opening passage and the main riff is a little more of a dark side snarl. "Hellfire" is a strong track. There is more bombast in this song and it connects well from verse to chorus. The riff is a bit more complicated and more energy is presented overall. I would probably pick this song to introduce someone to the album.

"Black Ford Rising" is a dirty and gritty song with plenty of attitude. It swings with more of a traditional Hard Rock kind of sound. The scream after the second chorus is just insane! "Billion Dollar Song" has a really catchy riff and shows some more diversity on the album, with a tender sound and more emotionally laded lyrics. I like this unexpected moment on the album. This is a very well-crafted song. "Forever Bitch" is kind of a combination between the heaviness of earlier tracks and the soft, more melodic aforementioned song. The riff is hard and heavy but the melodies come through nicely as well. "We Don't Call the Cops" is a fun title, for a song that has a swinging rhythm and a lighthearted nature. "Kite 'N Roll" closes the album, with plenty of hooks and melody. Overall I am impressed with the diversity on the album. Several songs, though simple, are quite memorable in the long run. It's Classic Heavy Metal more than Power Metal to me, and although they are not trying to re-invent the wheel, it's just fun to listen to.
