Surtur - Descendant of Time album cover

I think this is the first time that I ever listened to a band out of Bangladesh. In all due respect I believe that most of the Metal community in that very country might be quite underground. I don't know much about the government out there but probably Metal is not really well regarded. I think Bangladesh was one of the countries visited by Sam Dunn for the GLOBAL METAL documentary a few years ago but I am not entirely sure though. For people who didn't know (like yours truly), SURTUR is derived from Norse mythology and means ''Black'' or ''The Swarthy One''. It's something really important to the followers and descendants of that very mythology. The second album by AMON AMARTH is called ''Surtur Rising''. Surtur is also a satellite moon from Saturn but I am pretty damn sure this band didn't get their band name on this very fact!

Nothing fancy but a very effective quartet. The quality is subpar but the effort is really there. From their live performances, the band is very energetic and can build on that for the future. They remind me a lot of the early Thrash Metal scene in the beginning to mid eighties, bands played everywhere they could to hone their craft and these guys from Bangladesh are pretty young. They can work on everything with the live performances and that will translate into better things in the studio. They are the prototypical Thrash Metal band, an ode to the forefathers of the genre. They remind me a lot of the local scene here in Montreal like bands like ALCOHOLATOR or ABUSOR. In your face Thrash Metal with no holding back. Look it's not going to reinvent the wheel but it still has great basics and very enjoyable. It's good headbanging fun and its always awesome to see the young musicians dive head forward into music especially in smaller countries like Bangladesh. They have a nice future in front of them, let's hope they get their name across in different countries in the near future!
