Drunken Rollers - Boogie Generation album cover

DRUNKEN ROLLERS are an Italian Hard Rock band that claims to take influence from old school heavy-hitters such as ZZ TOP, THIN LIZZY, and LYNYRD SKYNYRD. While they have quoted some other big names in music, these are the ones I heard come through the strongest on this album. "Boogie Generation" has that funky 70s and 80s Groove Rock sound and manages to hit all the right pressure points for me. I couldn't have named the band if I hadn't known who they were, but I would have sworn that I had heard them before. That's how familiar these guys sound with their Classic Rock tone.

One of my favourite tracks is probably "Whiskey and Gasoline"; packed with hard-hitting solos and a great blend of Hard and Country Rock, it touches all the right bases. "Ballad of the Lone Rider" on the other hand is a really slow instrumental piece that blends acoustics and electric guitars into a nice ballad that mellows you out. "I'm Gone" definitely pulls out all the stops; bringing to mind all the things that made THIN LIZZY great - especially the guitar work. The title song, "Boogie Generation" on the other hand, has a groovy sound but is unfortunately far too repetitive.

I have to admit, that while I enjoyed the sound of the 28 second "Intro", it blended so seamlessly with the next track, "Start All Over Again" that I can't really excuse its inclusion on the album as a separate track. I am not a fan of short instrumental pieces used as a stand-alone opening, but this one could have easily been tacked onto the following track. It just feels like padding on the track list. That is pretty much my only real complaint.

This album was a lot of fun, with an upbeat and atmospheric Classic Rock sound. I couldn't always hear the influences these guys quoted as their inspiration, but that's not a bad thing, for they aren't a cover band. It's definitely worth checking out DRUNKEN ROLLERS on Bandcamp or Soundcloud for a hit of nostalgia with a breath of fresh air.
