Heavy Over The Home
Sanzu
Between the new and the old, but definitely sounding new, down under, at the edge of the world, there has been an undertaking. Debuting with a full length album, the horde from Perth, Australia, SANZU unveil its journey through the midst of Death Metal, scavenging for the relics of the past. Though based on the old extreme ways, the bunch made it clear that their music to become even more relevant, a few merits that are applied to the Hardcore nation were implemented. Thus, "Heavy Over The Home" was bred to life.
Embracing old school US Death Metal is quite a treat, no doubt, especially of such epic idols such as the late 80s capitols MORBID ANGEL and OBITUARY, two examples that I felt made it into SANZU's music. Most of all it was the blackened atmosphere surrounding the songs, unleashing a kind of usurping doom beneath the riffery and of course the simplicity of the arrangements. However, I deemed that the larger part of the SANZU displayed was their affixation with the modern edge of extreme Metal and the broken boundaries of later Hardcore. The French modern Metal arbiters GOJIRA came to mind on several ends, maybe to several of the least assorted areas of the tracklist. This particular hybrid made this experience rather interesting as the band paved the road to a possible uniqueness.
On the other hand, my general appreciation of "Heavy Over The Home" was rather an overcast end result, that from one side ended fast but from the other, it felt surprisingly shallow and empty. The song "The Chill" actually made itself the standout, with fine merger of energy and aura that lasted and made an impact. It felt Death Metal with a twist. "Those Who Sleep In The East" and the enigmatic "Ubiety" were close enough to the influence of the former song, especially the latter that was uncanny to tradition in its way. However, lackluster efforts as "Old Orchard Floor" and "Loss" served as the dozers.
In overall, this album began lifting itself up and then crumbled but then revamped and gave a potential taste for old and new fans of Death Metal. The next release would have to be much spicier, and additional speed is certainly not the answer.
