Dissecting your Future
Mutilatred
MUILATRED is a Death Metal band based out of Toledo, Ohio, USA. Following the release of a Demo album in 2014, the band presents their first full-length album containing thirteen tracks. When I read that the total running time is under 40 minutes, and that almost every song is under two minutes, I am dubious that we might have too homogeneous of an album here. However, when I also read that there is programming and piano, my interest is piqued. Either way, I will fully take in the album and provide some song highlights here in this review. "Skinned While Alive" opens ominously, with light machinery in the background. From there the song is short and furious, with ultra-deep Death growls and drop tuned guitar and bass riffs. "Fuck You" might be the intended reply to my original premise about the nature of the short songs...they spare nothing in their presentation of straight brutality here. So far no piano however.
"Control Their Minds" is a slower grind, with some riff variation here and there for accenting the sound. It has a mesmerizing flow to it as the title suggests. The brief programming at the end is neat, and I long for more of this. "Submerged in Agony" is one of the odd tracks out on the album, due to its playing length of nearly four minutes. The guitar chords are highly dissonant with no discernable melody. This is how Death Metal was born to be, but it doesn't make much beyond heavy. The title track, "Dissecting your Future," is faster and more bombastic, but it does not stray from the low E chord much. "Torn Apart" has a scarier and darker sound from the two chords in the main riff and I would like to have heard an extension of this carry more throughout the song, because it leaves an indelible mark on the listener, albeit briefly.
"Peeled Flesh" goes deep and the quicker pacing makes for a more memorable song, even though it is over before you know it. Then we come to the final track, "Exploded Veins," which is unexplainably nearly sixteen minutes in length. The final ten minutes is really the only place on the album to feature piano and extended programming, and I really think it adds texture to an otherwise forgettable album. I think if the band found a way to include more of this, they would have a more unique product. As it stands I found it pretty run-of-the-mill.
