Imber - The Black Swan Theory album cover

IMBER is a Metal/Hard Rock band based out of Stockholm, Sweden. Formed in 2009, the band released their debut full-length album in 2012. This EP was released in 2015 and contains five tracks. Leading off the EP is "The Rabbit Hole." It's heavy with electronica and production. Combined with the vocal harmonies and big chorus, it has a very slick and sugary sound that is easy on the ears and could be fit for radio play. Stylistically it might be closer to the general umbrella of Rock, with some Pop/Alternative elements. "I've Lost a Piece of Me" is a little thinner but the melodies are on point. This song bubbles with emotion and introspection. A well placed lead guitar break adds some strength. "Typical Illusion" is a little heavier and thicker, as the corners get rounded out nicely with some additional instrumentation and harmonies. I can hear a little more determination and purpose in how this song is structured. Up to this point the first three tracks have been three-to-four minutes in length and then we heard

"What Went Wrong," which is over seven minutes in length. From the start this track has a completely different feeling then the rest of the EP. It is a slow, tenuous piece, complete with church bells and a three-chord progression that registers in the minor range. Darkness abounds. Closing the album is a five minute song entitled "Mr. All the Stuff in the World." It's a mid-tempo track with some varied vocal approaches and favors a brightly shining chorus. The main riff is also very sturdy so the contrast is nice. Overall, the EP lands somewhere between "has potential" and "good" for me. There are moments where I feel it shines very well and other times where I question where the song is headed. There are also times I feel the EP has a collective identity and other times where it does not.
