Serenity - Codex Atlanticus album cover

Good day Metal-Temple. I've been following SERENITY for the last 5 years or so, and if I could describe the band with one word, it would be: stability. All of their records, so far, are solid and this one is no exception. "Codex Atlanticus" delivers exactly what we've come to expect from SERENITY; melodic and symphonic Power Metal. Although I'd like them to deviate a little sometime from doing the same exact kind of album each time.

Don't get me wrong, it is a solid performance. Everything is perfect and clear, the music is catchy and melodic. But I can't help but notice that there is not a lot of evolution in their sound. Oddly enough, the name "Codex Atlanticus" came from a renowned book written by Leonardo DA Vinci, who helped us evolve so much.

On to the songs, "Codex Atlanticus", which is the title track, is actually the opening to the album. It gives us the feeling of entering a fantasy world by the front door, literally. "Follow Me" starts slowly but it picks up into a fast pace symphonic and beautiful piece. It was my favorite songs of the album, being catchy and powerful at the same time.

After this song, we go down into old SERENITY with "Sprouts of Terror", "Iniquity" and "Reason". Again, those songs are very good, but I would have just liked a bit more than the usual SERENITY.

Any decent Power Metal album has one or more ballads on it. "My Final Chapter" and "The Perfect Woman" fit that bill exactly, with a slower beat and some female vocals by Clementine. I love Georg's voice on any ballads; his clear and vibrant tone gives life to any slow song.

By the end, I'm definitely happy to have some new SERENITY material to listen to. I just wish we could get a bit more, a little change in sound, something to stand out from the other albums, really that's all I'm asking. The album is a great buy for any Power Metal fans out there, especially if you've never heard of SERENITY before; this would be a great introduction to this awesome band.<
