Lost Soul - Atlantis: The New Beginning album cover

Black and Death Metal are easy genres to make fun of, and very easy genres for bands to get wrong, low-fi production and general horror (not in a positive, Black Metal Horror kind of way) being rife throughout the genre. Here, LOST SOUL have created an interesting and engaging album whilst still being heavy and brutal as F-. This Polish four piece are definitely pushing towards the more progressive end of the spectrum without sacrificing any bone-crushing power for their efforts, linking the songs together into a narrative arc, then bolting on some fantastic bonus tracks ("Red Giant" is a brutally heavy monolith of a song).

"Atlantis: The New Beginning" is a conceptual album based around... The lost city of Atlantis and has a suitably mystical air, especially the ancient, chanted intro of "Hypothelemus" which kick starts the album with an appropriately ghostly, pseudo religious ambience, before kicking into the high velocity metal.

The album's sound is huge, powerful and loud with tight, precise rhythms, incredibly violent, guttural screams and largely angular guitar parts. The occasional melodic stabs offer a brief respite from the aural assault offered, and give a nice momentary change of pace. The overall effect is of well-thought out and composted strength and brutality, intertwined with a concept and moments of pretty good guitar solo work and very strong sections of instrumental grooves.

While the majority of the album is incredibly band-oriented with lots of incredibly heavily growled vocals, the extended and more complex track "Atlantis" is a definite highlight, with longer instrumental passages, and a background choir which makes the whole thing a lot more haunting.
Overall, this album is well produced, heavy Death Metal with some ferocious riffs and brutal growls all done at incredible pace, and then rounded off with moments of melodic calm and ritualism which helps to further the idea of the story behind "Atlantis: The New Beginning."
